What is a Senior Independent Living Community?

March 2, 2014 by Dawn Dumont

In the state of New Hampshire, Independent Living Communities are sometimes grouped into the same category as Senior Housing and 55+ Housing. In other parts of the country, especially retirement destinations, they are often referred to Active Adult Communities or Gated Communities. All focus on housing for seniors who are still very much independent and need little to no assistance with ADLs or IALs.

Similar to Assisted Living Communities, Independent Living Communities offer a sense of community through organized group activities; Wellness Programs; the security of 24hour management and in many cases offer supportive services such as local transportation and meals. If a senior needs limited assistance, some choose to move into an Independent Living Community and hire a home health care agency or arrange for other community-based services.

Client Expressions

It is with pleasure that I provide this recommendation. Giving you little to no notice, our family appreciated the chance to sit and talk with you about assisted living for our Mom. It is because of your help that one week after being discharged from Concord Hospital she has a new home. Due to licensing, it was a community that we would have otherwise overlooked. I honestly believe this is your calling.
